Mid August in the Garden: There’s Still Plenty of Summer Left

By the middle of August, the garden can start to feel a little tired. Some summer blooms are fading, the heat has taken its toll and it’s easy to start thinking ahead to fall.

But there is still plenty of summer left, and this is actually a great time to give your garden a refresh.

At Designs by Lee, there’s still lots of color throughout the garden center, along with some great late summer savings. Whether you want to fill an empty spot, freshen up your containers or start planning for fall, there’s still plenty you can do in the garden right now.

Refresh Tired Containers

If your planters looked amazing in June but are starting to struggle now, you don’t necessarily need to start over.

Remove anything that has finished blooming, trim back plants that have gotten leggy and add a few fresh plants to give the container new life. Even changing out one or two plants can make a big difference and help carry your pots through the end of summer.

Keep the Garden Blooming

Late summer perennials are a great way to bring fresh color into the garden just when some of those earlier summer bloomers are starting to fade.

When you visit the garden center, take a look at what’s blooming right now. It’s one of the easiest ways to see exactly what your garden could look like this time of year.

Don’t Forget About Trees and Shrubs

You don’t have to wait until spring to add trees and shrubs.

Late summer is a great time to look around your property and figure out what’s missing, whether that’s replacing a plant, filling an empty area or finally tackling a spot you’ve been meaning to landscape.

If you’re planting during the warmer weather, watering is especially important. Newly planted trees and shrubs need consistent, deep watering while their roots become established.

Give Your Garden a Little Extra Attention

August heat can be tough on plants, especially containers and anything recently planted.

Check them regularly during hot or dry stretches and water deeply rather than giving plants a quick sprinkle. A little extra attention now can help everything stay looking good as we head toward fall.

Mid August Savings

It’s also a great time to take advantage of our current late summer sales throughout the garden center.

You’ll find savings on many of our annuals, perennials, trees and shrubs, tropicals, houseplants, pottery and more. Stop in and see what’s available. You may find the perfect plant or piece for a spot you’ve been wanting to refresh.

Fall Will Be Here Before We Know It

We’re definitely not rushing summer away, but fall gardening season is right around the corner.

Now is a good time to walk around your yard and think about what you might want to change. Take a few photos, make note of empty areas and start thinking about where you’d like more color or structure going into fall.

Come Take a Walk Around

There’s always something different to see at the garden center throughout the season.

Come take a walk around Designs by Lee, see what’s looking good, take advantage of our late summer sales and get a little inspiration for your own yard.
