Where Tradition and Community Take Root
A local, family-run garden center where history, community, and a few friendly animals make everyone feel at home.
For generations, the land we call home has been dedicated to growing. Our property has operated as a nursery since the late 1800s, serving as a place where plants, people, and community have always been deeply connected. In 1965, horticulturist Lee Pepin officially founded Designs By Lee, transforming the grounds into a beloved local destination for gardeners across Stamford and the surrounding area. In the early 2000s, the Cocco family proudly took ownership, preserving the nursery’s legacy while continuing to grow its offerings for the next generation of plant lovers.
Today, Designs By Lee is run by Al, Chris, Emily Lato, and her husband Dan, who you’ll often find greeting guests, sharing plant advice, unloading fresh deliveries, or tending to seasonal displays. As a family-operated business, we are passionate about cultivating not just healthy plants—but genuine connections with the gardeners, families, and neighbors who visit us year after year. Our community focus remains at the heart of everything we do, from hosting seasonal events to supporting local organizations and creating a welcoming space where everyone can slow down and enjoy nature.
Wandering through our 14-acre property, you’ll discover more than just a garden center—you’ll find a place that feels like home. Kids love visiting our friendly goats, shoppers are frequently trailed by our resident cat Missus, and guests of all ages enjoy exploring, learning, and getting inspired throughout the seasons. Whether you’re planting your first container or transforming your whole landscape, we’re here to help with expert guidance, quality plants, and a welcoming environment that celebrates the joy of growing.
Thank you for supporting our family business—and for helping keep this historic nursery thriving for over a century. We look forward to growing with you for many years to come.
