October is one of our favorite times of year at Designs by Lee. The garden center is full of fall color, the weather is finally cooling down, and there's still plenty of time to get outside and work on your landscape.
While most people think of spring when it comes to planting, fall is actually one of the best times to plant trees and shrubs here in Connecticut.
Why Plant in the Fall?
After a long, hot summer, cooler temperatures are a welcome change for both gardeners and plants.
The ground is still holding onto warmth from summer, which allows roots to continue growing even as the temperatures outside begin to drop. With less heat and stress, newly planted trees and shrubs have a chance to settle in before winter.
And the best part? Planting now means you'll have one less project to tackle when spring rolls around.
What Should You Be Planting Right Now?
If you've been thinking about adding something new to your yard, there are plenty of great options this time of year.
Deciduous trees and shrubs are a wonderful choice for adding seasonal interest. From beautiful fall foliage to spring flowers, they bring something different to your landscape throughout the year.
Evergreens are perfect for adding year round greenery, privacy and structure to your yard. Whether you're looking to create a natural screen or fill in an empty space, there are lots of options to choose from.
Perennials can also be planted in the fall, especially hardy varieties that will return year after year.
Not sure what would work best in your space? Stop by and talk with us. We're always happy to help you figure out what makes sense for your yard.
Don't Forget to Water!
One thing we always remind customers is that just because the weather is cooler doesn't mean you can stop watering.
Newly planted trees, shrubs and perennials still need regular watering while their roots get established. Keep an eye on rainfall and continue watering as needed until the ground freezes.
Adding a layer of mulch is also a great way to help hold in moisture and protect roots as temperatures drop.
A little care now can make a big difference come spring.
