Repotting Houseplants: A Simple Guide from Designs by Lee Garden Center

Repotting your houseplants is one of the easiest ways to refresh their growth, improve root health, and keep them looking their best. Many common plant problems come down to pot size and drainage. Here’s a simple guide to help you repot the right way.

Choose the Right Pot Size

When repotting, bigger is not always better. A pot that is too large can actually harm your plant.

Rule of thumb:

Choose a pot no more than 2 inches wider than the current container.

When a pot is too big, extra soil holds excess moisture. That moisture can sit around the roots and lead to root rot, fungus, and unhealthy growth. A slightly larger pot encourages steady, strong root development instead of overwhelming the plant.

Drainage Is Essential

Drainage holes are one of the most important parts of plant care. Without proper drainage, water collects at the bottom of the pot and suffocates the roots.

If you are planting directly into a decorative pot, make sure it has:

At least one drainage hole

A tray or saucer if used indoors

Good drainage helps prevent overwatering and keeps roots healthy.

No Drainage Hole? Use a Pot Inside

If you love a decorative pot that doesn’t have a hole, you can still use it safely — just don’t plant directly into it.

Instead:

Keep your plant in a plastic nursery or grower pot

Place that pot inside the decorative container

Add a small layer of stones or pebbles at the bottom of the outer pot

The stones help elevate the inner pot so excess water doesn’t sit around the roots. When watering, you can lift the inner pot out briefly, let it drain fully, and then place it back inside.

Signs It’s Time to Repot

Not every plant needs frequent repotting. Look for these signs:

Roots growing out of the drainage hole

Soil drying out unusually fast

Plant becoming top-heavy or unstable

Slowed growth despite proper care

Most houseplants only need repotting every 12–24 months, depending on the plant and growth rate.

Repotting should feel like giving your plant a comfortable upgrade — not moving it into a mansion. A slightly bigger pot, proper drainage, and fresh soil can make a big difference in overall plant health and growth.
